Eric's favorite song

Over in the usenet newsgroup alt.music.eric-clapton, someone asked the following:

> What would be EC's favorite song?
> Has he stated one song being his favorite?
>
> I would say that "Key to the Highway" might be one of his favorites; what ya guys think??

It got me to thinking so I penned and submitted the following response to the group:

This is a tough call to make. One has to come to grips with how Eric defines his favorites. Would they be the tunes which are revealing and autobiographical. . .i.e. "Ain't Goin' Down," "Layla," "Tears In Heaven," or "Circus" or would he tend to like the songs he has recorded which exihibit his mastery of the guitar?

My thoughts? Everyone knows of his guitar playing abilities; he revealed that side of himself from early in his career. Revelation of the inner Eric came later and often at the expense of the guitar hero label. It is this course which he is still, by and large, still on. . .choosing new and original material which tends, for the most part, to let you look inside his heart and soul at the expense of finger wizardry.

So. . .

I tend to think he likes the more laid back and introspective material of the past and present more than spectacular 12 bar blues he plays without equal.

No one else has responded for the more than a week the question has been posted (not the most active group in the world).

Any thoughts on the question over here?

I honestly think it's a silly question. Clapton's music is so diverse and so deep that to suggest that he'd even be ABLE to have ONE favorite song is kinda crazy. Perhaps he's like many artists- his favorite is the song he's playing at the moment.

I know MY favorite Clapton song is whatever happens to be coming out of the speakers, but I've seen God in concert several times, and each time I hear his music, I'm launched through the time machine to the last time I heard him play.

    Peace,

    T
