Hi there Ozzy and The Shaman,
I'll be going to the concert here in Seattle and this will be my 14th Clapton concert. I believe that is the correct number but I could be off either way by a one or two! But that's not what I want to share. What I wanted to tell you two is that my father and mother who were both in their late 60's attended a Clapton concert with me at the Tacoma Dome a few years ago. They had a GREAT time. Now I have asked my father, who is now 71, if he would like to go with my sister and myself to the upcoming concert and he is really excited about it.
Now to my sister. She is 51 years old and has never seen Eric. . .but she is also really thrilled about going. To give her some idea of what to expect, I just emailed her the following message (her name is Peggy):
Peggar (my favorite sister),
Eric played Barcelona, Spain on March 24 and here is the setlist from that night:
Let it Rain
Hoochie Coochie Man
Bell Bottom Blues
Walk out in the Rain
I shot the Sheriff
When you ´ve got a Good Friend
Milk Cow Blues
Kind Hearted Woman Blues
They ´re Red Hot
Hellhound on my Trail
Change the World
Got to get Better in a little While
I Wanna Little Girl
Badge
Wonderful Tonight
Cocaine
Layla
encore: Sunshine of your Love
If you don't recognize some of the songs don't worry because that is not important. The tour is to promote Eric's new album which is a tribute to the mystic blues figure of the 1930's whose name was Robert Johnson. Do you recall the song that Clapton did with Cream called "Crossroads?" (I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees. . .)
But it really doesn't matter what songs he chooses to include in the Seattle show. The miracle begins when he starts playing the guitar. YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE WHAT YOU HEAR. If you find yourself uncontrollably weeping with joy as plays, don't be surprised. A quick look at others around you will reveal that you aren't the only one who can't control it. You will never, ever forget it. Trust me.
I am happy and honored that you have chosen to be there with me and dad.
Brother Martin
So what do you think. . .will this have her prepared? CAN ANYTHING HAVE ANYBODY PREPARED FOR THEIR FIRST CLAPTON CONCERT?
Regards,
Martin (Starstuffed)

Re: My sister
Fri, April 9, 2004 - 10:08 AMStarstuffed, cool letter.
Get her the "One more car, one more rider" DVD and Hyde Park DVD to watch on the NICE stereo setup you are gonna go hook up to her television so she can have SOME idea of what to expect. These are both recent tour DVDs and the audio and video production values are BEYOND anything I could have hoped for. They are the soundtrack to many days at home.
Otherwise, she'll be doing the 'wow, this is new' bit, rather than 'oh my god, I can't talk because of the way that grabs me'. Take as much of the suprise out of it as possible, but show her the necessity of watching these DVDs with the respect you would should a serious celebration of spiritual love.
I gotta tell you, I've spent every evening I've seen Eric live in tears. Not at all odd admitting here.
ECs magic is such that there will NEVER be another who touches me the way his voice, guitar, music, and heart do. Nothing like Old Love to tear the stitches from the wounds of every former love you've ever had, clean out the bits and pieces, and cause you to remember the most spiritual aspects of those loves... or River of Tears to send you into a bawling spiral of sorrow and hope that someday things will be perfect again.
Eric's music should be heard by all. IT is unfortunate that millions of people who THINK they know what Eric's music is about, will NEVER know the truth. How many times have you said "Eric Clapton" and they've said "Ah, Cocaine and Wonderful Tonight....catchy tunes..." because ALL they've ever heard is FM radio playing that which FM radio thinks is worthy of airplay?
Glad you understand. :)
Clapton IS god.
Peace,
The Shaman -

Re: My sister
Fri, April 9, 2004 - 3:25 PMBows her humbled head. This will be my first EC show. I have seen some greats but everyone has told me what you two are saying about seeing Clapton live. I have been moved to tears by live shows before. I'll expect to be weeping. God now I have to decide who to take. Maybe I should invite my father? -

Fri, April 9, 2004 - 3:47 PMOzzy,
I truly believe you could do no better than taking your dad. You will both have a marvelous time and one day, when he is very old -- and you no longer a "spring chicken" :o) -- the memory created this July 27th will be one you both cherish and replay over and over again.
