This month sometime, Sanctuary is supposed to release a DVD of Blind Faith's legendary performance at Hyde Park, 1969. However, I haven't found any mention of a specific date or if it's a worldwide release or one that's strictly for the UK. There is a link somewhere to the official website, but I must apologize--I forgot it.

Note the set of songs being played. It is good to see some neglected tunes from EC's past included; "Everybody Oughta Make A Change," is a GREAT piece of material off of a critically acclaimed album Clapton put out many, many years ago, titled "Money and Cigarettes."

Anyway, truly an interesting mix of songs, however, I wish Eric would put "Wonderful Tonight" to bed. It is played at every performance it seems and I have seen Eric about 12 or 13 times and it has certainly been played at all of those dates that were done after the release of the "Slowhand" album from whence the song came. I know the tune was written by Eric as a tribute and memory to Patti and I wonder if his not letting go of the tune ("Layla" has been played most every stop too since he and she split) means he can't completely let go of her. But he is married now, and happily we are told so perhaps the playing of these tunes is just a co-ink-e-dinkie.
Eric Clapton is taking his blues to Red Square. His summer European tour, which starts May 5th in France, will wrap up in Moscow on August 3rd. It will be his first-ever performance at the former Soviet landmark, though he's not the first rock legend to play there -- Paul McCartney did it in May 2003. Red Square has also played host to opera stars Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti, and there was a Live 8 show last July with the 80s synth-pop group the Pet Shop Boys.

Eric Clapton's band for the European dates will include Allman Brothers guitarist Derek Trucks.

A North American tour is in the cards, but the dates haven't been announced yet.

Hey just letting all Clapton fans know I found a DVD today that I've never seen before. It is an hour and half performace of EC playing with Steve Gaad, Marcus Miller, David Sandborn and Joe Sample. It's from the Montreaux Jazz Festival from 1997. I heard about this back in '97, but completely forgot about until I saw it today at a Circuit City in Chicago. So notable songs include, "Going Down Slow", "Everyday I Have the Blues' and a really strange version of "Layla" in which Marcus Miller plays bass clarinet on. And if you like Clapton, please check out my band at www.myspace.com/shamelessplace

Review of "Back Home" by Tony Edser/Where's Eric!

When I interviewed Eric Clapton in April 2003, around the time he was starting work on this album, he remarked “I couldn’t be happier really, I’ll see if I can try and make a happy album without it being yeuch!”

He was referring, of course, to the contentment in his life brought about by having a settled marriage and children and his natural desire to write songs about the family.

Has he succeeded? Well, if you’d asked me after one play through I would have said “Oh my God, no!” Referring back to the notes I made as I listened to the album for the first time, I see comments like “poppy, instantly catchy”, “filler”, “Isley Brothers outtake” and even “Eurovision” alongside the various track titles. Thankfully, with the benefit of repeated listening, and a period of two weeks in between where I left the album completely alone, I am pleased to say this album has grown on me considerably. In fact, I’m reminded of the lyrics to one of Eric’s famous 70’s songs – “Let it grow, let it grow, let it blossom, let it flow”. In other words, give it time and the true meaning and value of this album will manifest itself. The songs sit together well as a collection - the album doesn’t have the disjointed feel of Reptile for example - there is plenty of tastefully understated guitar work and the production is superb; there’s often lots going on in the mix but it never sounds cluttered.

It shows Eric really is happy with his lot at the moment – there isn’t an out and out blues tune in sight! True, I could have done without some of the more mawkish lyrics (“Mum’s getting snappy coz Daddy won’t change no nappy”) and the baby crying on the opening track, So Tired, whilst even the choice of cover versions (I’m Going Left excluded) is, unusually for Eric, rather insipid. However, I’ve regularly found myself humming many of this album’s melodies, even subconsciously, and I just can’t get the guitar solos to the outstanding track, One Day, out of my head – they’re just so so tasty.

Think about some of Eric’s recent work – touring the world in 2004 where he and his red-hot band were rocking and rolling like teenagers every night, the Me and Mr Johnson recordings with their intense, fiery blues passion and lastly 4 nights of unparalleled supergroupdom with Cream and you can understand the pleasure for Eric in just coming “Back Home”.

However, on Disc 2, once it gets to "I Shot The Sheriff" it freezes. I had thought, at first, that it was just an unfortunate defective disc. So, I exchanged it the other day and it does the smae thing, except this time, if I skip to the next chapter, it goes back to J.J. Cale, Robert Randolph, Doyle Bramhall, Santana/Clapton, which is all on the last quarter of Disc 1.

Does anyone else have this problem?

I'm gonna call Reprise and let them know about this. I could see this happening with one defective product, but two consecutive sets in a row??????

Over in the usenet newsgroup alt.music.eric-clapton, someone asked the following:

> What would be EC's favorite song?
> Has he stated one song being his favorite?
>
> I would say that "Key to the Highway" might be one of his favorites; what ya guys think??

It got me to thinking so I penned and submitted the following response to the group:

This is a tough call to make. One has to come to grips with how Eric defines his favorites. Would they be the tunes which are revealing and autobiographical. . .i.e. "Ain't Goin' Down," "Layla," "Tears In Heaven," or "Circus" or would he tend to like the songs he has recorded which exihibit his mastery of the guitar?

My thoughts? Everyone knows of his guitar playing abilities; he revealed that side of himself from early in his career. Revelation of the inner Eric came later and often at the expense of the guitar hero label. It is this course which he is still, by and large, still on. . .choosing new and original material which tends, for the most part, to let you look inside his heart and soul at the expense of finger wizardry.

So. . .

I tend to think he likes the more laid back and introspective material of the past and present more than spectacular 12 bar blues he plays without equal.

No one else has responded for the more than a week the question has been posted (not the most active group in the world).

Any thoughts on the question over here?

The following is from the newsgroup "alt.music.eric-clapton" and while the original poster seems to be a might more orientated towards the pop side of Eric than I am, still this little review has something to offer:

***********************

Hi all

Thought I'd thank those who replied to previous thread and put a few words up about last nights Belfast gig Saturday 24th.

Support band cane on dead on 8:00 and were excellent very high quality performance for half an hour ... didn't catch their name though.

After a wait Eric and the band came on and "got on with it" a man of few words our Eric I think through the entire evening he said five words "good evening" and "thank you" a couple of times.

The playlist was as published on the websites and obviously the same throughout Europe. The Odessey has its own CCTV system so the thing went out on the two screens either side of the stage some great close ups of the guitar riffs etc. Light show excellent without being OTT.

For me the older stuff is still the best with "I Shot the Sheriff" title 4 or 5. A few more Blues numbers and onto a set including "Badge, "Layla" and the final "Cocaine". GREAT STUFF

The band returned for two song encore including "Sunshine of ..." and another title that I recognized but can't recall the name.

Gig finished by 10:45 so there was 1hr 45mins of Clapton and half hour of the support band. Great value for the £38.00 ticket.

> Hi all
>
> Going to the Belfast show on Saturday anyone know what merchandise will be
> on offer and how much it costs especially programs??

In paris it was :

poster : 5?
Cap : 30?
T-shirt : 30?
Mug : 10?
Programme : 15?

I don't remember the other products.

Now, I am not sure what the monetary units are, but it does gives us some idea of what is being offered at the shows and how much they are relative to each other. . .a cap cost the same as a T-shirt and a program cost half of that amount. As it stands right now, I see myself getting a T-shirt (or two), a mug (for sure), and a program.

The response alludes to other products. . .I hope I have some money left.

I'll leave you to your own means to see his response to that (I read it in the magazine section at a Safeway grocery store).

My opinion? Yes, Eric is bigger than the blues, at least the way I interpret the question. To me, it is saying that his take on the blues has more avid followers than "traditional" blues and that he probably sales more albums and draws more people to concerts than the other top 10 blues artists combined.

Hope you enjoy the interview. Oh, yeah. . .he also states in the interview that another album is in the works and that Me and Mr. Johnson is something a step to that awaiting album. I think that's the way he put it.

I'll be going to the concert here in Seattle and this will be my 14th Clapton concert. I believe that is the correct number but I could be off either way by a one or two! But that's not what I want to share. What I wanted to tell you two is that my father and mother who were both in their late 60's attended a Clapton concert with me at the Tacoma Dome a few years ago. They had a GREAT time. Now I have asked my father, who is now 71, if he would like to go with my sister and myself to the upcoming concert and he is really excited about it.

Now to my sister. She is 51 years old and has never seen Eric. . .but she is also really thrilled about going. To give her some idea of what to expect, I just emailed her the following message (her name is Peggy):

Peggar (my favorite sister),

Eric played Barcelona, Spain on March 24 and here is the setlist from that night:

Let it Rain
Hoochie Coochie Man
Bell Bottom Blues
Walk out in the Rain
I shot the Sheriff
When you ´ve got a Good Friend
Milk Cow Blues
Kind Hearted Woman Blues
They ´re Red Hot
Hellhound on my Trail
Change the World
Got to get Better in a little While
I Wanna Little Girl
Badge
Wonderful Tonight
Cocaine
Layla

encore: Sunshine of your Love

If you don't recognize some of the songs don't worry because that is not important. The tour is to promote Eric's new album which is a tribute to the mystic blues figure of the 1930's whose name was Robert Johnson. Do you recall the song that Clapton did with Cream called "Crossroads?" (I went down to the crossroads, fell down on my knees. . .)

But it really doesn't matter what songs he chooses to include in the Seattle show. The miracle begins when he starts playing the guitar. YOU WILL NOT BELIEVE WHAT YOU HEAR. If you find yourself uncontrollably weeping with joy as plays, don't be surprised. A quick look at others around you will reveal that you aren't the only one who can't control it. You will never, ever forget it. Trust me.

I am happy and honored that you have chosen to be there with me and dad.

Brother Martin

So what do you think. . .will this have her prepared? CAN ANYTHING HAVE ANYBODY PREPARED FOR THEIR FIRST CLAPTON CONCERT?

Regards,

During a tour in the 1980s, Eric Clapton played three consecutive nights at Seattle's Paramount Theater. I had camped out for tickets the night before they went on sale and it paid off. . .first in line netted me front row seats on all three nights.

Front row is great. Forget what you may have heard about "bad acoustics" that close. They were good enough and even if they had not been, there I was just 30 or so feet away from Eric (my friend and I had seats just to the right of center).

I waved at Eric a couple of times on the first night when I caught his eye scanning those seated in front of him. The second night, when I caught him looking at the people in the first few rows before him, I waved again. This time he gave me a brief smile as if to acknowledge that he remembered me from the previous night.

On night number three I managed to sneak a small 35mm camera inside(no
flash attachment. When the time came that he once again was checking out the crowd, his eyes went immediately to where I was seated. I think he expected me -- having seen me in the same location the previous two nights. I was ready. I waved again with my left hand and quickly held up the little camera which was nestled in my lap with my right hand. . .just high enough for him to see it. To my surprise, he smiled again but this time with just the slightest, almost undiscernable, nod of his head. Easing his way over a few feet to stand almost directly in front of me, he unleashed one of the most fiery and convoluted guitar solos that one can imagine. Head back, eyes closed, almost unconsciously tapping into that guitar universe where only he can go, the notes conceived in his mind and born through his fingers were riveting. I raised the camera and got off a quick exposure while he was bathed in blue light. The solo continued and I caught him "sneaking" a look at me to as if to see if I was photographing him and then he closed his eyes and lost himself again. I snapped a couple of other pictures.

Coming out of his tour de force, he once again "regained consciousness," and looked directly at me. I nodded my head and he knew I had my pictures.

No one caught me. I'm sure that only Eric, myself, and my friend knew what had transpired. Twenty years later, I still have the one photo that really turned out well.

What a night. . .what a star.

This is a BRAND NEW tribe, so please, feel free to make it into what you desire it to be, as long as it is positive.

I've seen him several times, and each time was more amazing. If all you have ever heard is the stuff on the radio, GO BUY SOME CONCERT VIDEO ON DVD OR VHS! It's AMAZING!!!
